    Yayoi Kusama has sadly passed away.

    On Wednesday night (August 26), it was announced that the famed Japanese artist had died at the age of 97 earlier this month at a hospital in Tokyo.

    Kusama‘s passing was shared in a statement from The Yayoi Kusama Museum and the Yayoi Kusama Foundation, which revealed that she died on August 14.

    It is with profound sorrow that the passing of Yayoi Kusama at a hospital in Tokyo on August 14, 2026, at the age of 97.

    Throughout an extraordinary lifetime devoted entirely to artistic creation, Kusama pursued an internationally acclaimed career as a pioneering avant-garde artist whose creative practice encompassed visual art, performance, fiction, and poetry.

    She continued to paint until her final days, never setting aside her brush, and continued exploration of forever love and eternal soul.

    We will carry forward Kusama’s wishes and, through art, continue to bring hope and strength for the future to people around the world.

    Yayoi Kusama dies at 97

    As of right now, a cause of death has not been made public.

    Kasuma took her career from postwar Japan to New York City, before eventually moving to museums and galleries around the world. She developed a visual language that was immediately recognizable in her work through painting, sculpture, installation, and performance.

    She was most recognized for her polka-dot paintings, phallic sculptures, and public performances. Her famous “Infinity Mirror Rooms,” which are large-scale installations that immerse audiences in endless repeating reflections of color and light, still attract millions of gallery visitors.
