In an absolutely unprecedented weekend at the box office, A24 destroyed its opening weekend record with Backrooms, which opened to $81 million domestic and another $37 million internationally for a total take of $118 million. The film was directed by 20 year-old Kane Parsons, produced on a $10 million budget, and based on a creepypasta and YouTube series, yet it is performing like a blockbuster.

In a similar unheard of vein, the weekend take of Obsession has risen once again, this time to $26.4 million. The weekend box office of a film rising three weekends in a row simply does not happen, but word-of-mouth has driven this film to $104 million domestic and $148 million worldwide on a $1 million production budget.

On the extreme other end of the spectrum, the new Star Wars film The Mandolorian and Grogu dropped to third place in its second weekend with a $25 million take, falling 70% from its opening weekend. It has made $137.4 million domestically and $246.6 worldwide in its first two weekends, which is not terrible on a $165 million production budget, but far from the success Disney was hoping for with an entry in one of its flagship properties.

Michael is still hanging around the top five, coming in fourth place with $11.7 million. It has made $339.9 million in North America and $851.3 million globally, and is on track to pass Bohemian Rhapsody to become the highest grossing biopic of all time.

In fifth place was The Breadwinner, the Nate Bargatze starring comedy, with $7.5 million. Critics were unkind, leaving the film with a 28% Rotten Tomatoes score, but audiences gave it an A- Cinemascore. It is overperforming in the middle portion of the U.S.

New release Pressure came in 7th with a $5.4 million take, but received a solid A Cinemascore from audiences. And Tuner, which expanded from last weekend, only brought in $1.7 million for 11th place.
