American Airlines is swapping airports for some flights in New York.
The Oneworld alliance carrier will move its seasonal nonstop to Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN) from New York’s LaGuardia Airport (LGA) to John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in 2027. The reason? The flight can operate on more than just Saturdays from JFK whereas it is restricted to that one day of the week from LGA.
The swap is part of a larger set of adjustments to American’s map for next year. The airline will end six routes — including LGA-BZN — and add two routes from JFK as it tweaks its schedule in an effort to return to consistent profitability.

American is also undertaking a massive investment in its onboard and airport offerings, from new business class suites to personal screens at all seats across its single-aisle fleet and updated lounges, in an effort to woo lucrative premium fliers.
New York JFK expansion
American’s new routes from JFK are the aforementioned nonstop to BZN, which will operate four-days-a-week on a Boeing 737-8 from June 18, 2027, and a new twice-daily service to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) on an Airbus A321neo launches April 6, 2027. American last flew the JFK-SEA route in 2019.
SEA is the main hub of American’s partner and fellow Oneworld member Alaska Airlines. The airlines last week unveiled plans for Alaska to join two of American’s joint ventures across both the Atlantic and Pacific in the coming years.
JV membership allows airlines to coordinate schedules, fares and other commercial activities in a specific market, for example the U.S. to Europe.
“American is continuing to build a network from New York that offers customers more choice and more ways to connect to the destinations they care about,” Jason Reisinger, the managing director of global network planning at American, said in a statement. The additions “enhances our offering from JFK and complements the more than 100 destinations we serve nonstop from New York.”

The airline will compete with Alaska, Delta Air Lines and JetBlue Airways on both new routes, schedule data from aviation analytics firm Cirium shows. United Airlines also flies to BZN and SEA from nearby Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR).

What American’s cutting
American will end six routes as part of its latest route map update. They are:
- Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) – Lincoln Airport (LNK), Nebraska: flights end in April 2027
- Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) – Albany International Airport (ALB), New York: seasonal summer flights will not resume in May 2027 as planned
- Miami International Airport (MIA) – Tulum International Airport (TQO), Mexico: flights end in January 2027
- MIA – Montréal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL): flights end in January 2027
- LGA – BZN: seasonal summer flights will not resume in May 2027 as planned
- Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) – Provo Airport (PVU), Utah: flights end in January 2027
No destination loses service on American entirely. However, three markets — LNK, PVU and TQO — will only have nonstop flights to DFW, the airline’s largest hub, following the latest cuts.
International additions: American Airlines adds 3 new European destinations in 7-route expansion
“As part of targeted actions to strengthen the airline, American will moderate its planned growth next summer,” an airline spokesperson said of the cuts.
The moderated growth comes as American, and all airlines, deal with high fuel costs owing to the supply chain disruptions associated with the U.S. and Israel’s war with Iran.
The average cost of jet fuel stood at $4.43 a gallon on Monday, data from industry trade association Airlines for America (A4A) shows. For comparison, American paid an average of $2.42 per gallon in 2025.
