– A visibly ill Novak Djoković lost to 25-year-old Mariano Navone in five sets marked by bouts of vomiting and medical timeouts for pills and a back treatment. It was his first first-round exit from a Slam since the 2006 Australian Open, and his first ever from the first round of the US Open.
– After the match, Djoković said, “It’s something that I’ve been carrying, unfortunately, pretty much every match this year: vomiting, throwing up, a serious issue there. Then my whole body starts to collapse, basically cramping and pain. Yeah, the back just gave up in the end, and shoulder, and I couldn’t close it out.” After similar troubles at the Cincinnati Open earlier this month, he said that it’s something he’s been dealing with for a couple years, with worse flare-ups in heat and humidity.
– This may have been the 39-year-old’s final US Open.
