Ridley Scott is opening up about the future of the Alien movie franchise!

The 88-year-old Oscar-nominated filmmaker has directed three of the films, including the first one, and more recently, 2017’s Alien: Covenant.

In a new interview promoting his upcoming film The Dog Stars, Ridley confirmed he’s working on a third Alien prequel, which would serve as a sequel to Alien: Covenant and has been in the works for several years.

While speaking with the LA Times, Ridley revealed that the new movie would pick up with Michael Fassbender‘s character, David, as he creates a “brave new world for himself.” He also said he’s fascinated by the character, who is a malfunctioning AI.

“AIs can go off,” he said. “And if they do, it’s like a bomb.”

While he has made several films about AI in the past and plans to continue making more, Ridley says he prefers making movies about AI and not using it himself.

“The uneasy question is: Can the AI only be as good as the information fed into it?” the acclaimed filmmaker shared. “If I say ‘Here’s a blank canvas, write me such and such,’ would that just be a mélange of millions of other scripts? Probably. But the danger is it’ll pass that point and become smarter than we are.”

The Alien: Covenant sequel would mark Ridley‘s first return to the franchise, after he said, “I think I’ve done enough,” in response to where the franchise was going.

Since his last film, only one movie has been released, Alien: Romulus, as well as a spinoff TV series, Alien: Earth.
