Dr Dre is speaking out about using AI in music.
The 61-year-old rapper and producer recently admitted in a new interview that he is embracing artificial intelligence and is using it to produce.
“I don’t see it as a threat. I think the only people that see it as a threat are the people who have trouble creating,” Dre told The New York Times.
“I had a discussion with a few people a few days ago. They were against A.I. and I’m like, ‘OK, you sound like the person that would have been against the drum machine when it came out.’ Or synthesizers, right? It’s a new tool for creativity. Some people are afraid of learning new things,” he added. “I’m embracing it. I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen with this.”
When asked if he was using AI while producing, Dr Dre confirmed he was, but clarified he uses it “as a tool to see what it would do with what I just did.”
In the same interview, Dr Dre‘s business partner and longtime friend Jimmy Iovine said Timbaland also uses AI and that there are “a lot of closet AI producers out there.”
“That’s a good way to put it. They’re using it, they just don’t want to admit it,” Dr Dre said.
Earlier this year, another music artist called out musicians using AI as “godless whores.”
