The 44-year-old star had to film some intimate moments with the Hollywood icon for their new motion picture The Invite, but director Olivia Wilde was bemused as to why he kept thanking the 52-year-old star during improvised scenes.

Speaking on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Seth – who has been married to fellow actor Lauren Miller since 2011 – said: “What’s actually funny in the scene is we were encouraged to improvise.

“There’s a scene where me and her are having a romantically-charged moment and it seems like we might hook up with one another, and I just kept saying ‘Thank you.’

“And Olivia Wilde, the director, was just like, ‘Why? What are you doing? Why do you keep saying ‘Thank you’?

“And I was like, ‘I don’t [know]. It’s just what’s coming out of my mouth.’

Rogen joked that if he was in the same situation in real life he would have plenty of “gratitude” for Penelope.

He said: “I would be apologetic and thankful. I’m sorry.”

Rogen also quipped that he was concerned about what Cruz’s husband, Hollywood star Javier Bardem, would think of the intimate scenes.

But Seth insisted Javier, 57, wouldn’t see him as a “legitimate threat in any way, shape or form”.

He added: “So, you’re very worried about that,” he said, though he added with a laugh, “I don’t think he views me as a legitimate threat in any way, shape or form.”

However, it wasn’t all fun and games for Rogen while shooting such steamy scenes, because he fell over and hurt his shoulder for seven months.

Speaking about a moment when Cruz decided her character should sing Sade during a romantic scene, he explained: “It’s funny if I’m trying to get my pants off and maybe I struggle and I fall down in the scene. And I did it. Everyone’s like, ‘That was great.’

“And then I hurt my shoulder for seven months.”

Rogen and Cruz also star alongside director Wilde and Edward Norton in the movie.
