First the important fashion news! During prelims, Jordan Chiles wore a leotard inspired by Beyonce’s Renaissance tour:
Who was unable to compete at the U.S. Championships due to injuries: [Spoiler (click to open)]
Two weeks ago, for the first time in history, there were three Olympic all around gold medalists competing together (Simone, Suni, and Gabby) at the U.S. Classic. Fans were rooting for 28 year old Gabby to make a comeback but she withdrew after falling twice on bars during her first rotation. She was on the roster to compete at this weekend’s U.S. Championships, but on Thursday she announced she was withdrawing due to an ankle injury she sustained during training.
Shilese Jones has been a strong contender for the Olympics, but she already had a shoulder injury flare up at the U.S. Classic two weeks ago (she still placed second in AA, first on bars, second on floor, and fourth on beam despite her injury). She tore her labrum two years ago and said she will eventually need surgery. On Friday, she announced that she was withdrawing from the U.S. Championships due to her shoulder. Her petition to USA Gymnastics to compete at the Olympic Trials next month was approved.
To no one’s surprise, Simone Biles won a record ninth national all around title, besting the second place finisher by a whopping 5.9 points. During prelims, she finished with a 60.45 total, the highest ever all around score since the new scoring system was established.
