Yellowstone‘s spinoff Dutton Ranch has just gotten started but has there already been talks about when it will end?
Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser weighed in on the plan for the hit Paramount+ series, telling The Hollywood Reporter earlier this month that they were both interested in returning for multiple seasons.
“If the writing is good. You never want to hold on too tightly in this profession, right?” Reilly, 48, said. “So honestly, we’re very grateful to be here and if we get a chance to keep making something we’re proud of, then we’re here. If not, we’re both working actors and we’ll be fine.”
Hauser, 51, called it “pretty cool” to keep going, adding, “I always feel like if the audience continues to speak the way that they have about the show for the last 10 years or so, then I would love to continue to entertain them.”
Paramount+’s hit franchise started with Yellowstone, which premiered in 2018 and introduced viewers to the fictional Dutton family. Fans got to know their characters, Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, who had a decades-long relationship that endures peaks and pitfalls, on the hit series. The show came to an end in 2024, expanding its universe with Luke Grimes’ CBS show Marshals and Dutton Ranch.
“We haven’t heard five [seasons]. I think we’re taking it one season at a time,” Reilly told the outlet before Hauser noted, “This has been a beast. We haven’t had any time to even think about it either. We literally filmed to the end of March and we’ve been on the road selling the show.”
Reilly hinted there was a story step up — at least for season 2.
“I think we have some ideas about season 2, with where we left season 1,” she shared. “We can’t talk about the ending, but we’re super excited about where it goes and so we already know sort of where the beginning is and that’s exciting.”
Season 2 is expected to look a bit different, however, after Us Weekly confirmed that Chad Feehan will not return as showrunner after completing work on season 1. Puck News previously reported that Feehan stepped away from Dutton Ranch after alleged friction with series stars Hauser and Reilly, among others.
“Showrunners change all the time,” Hauser told The Hollywood Reporter. “This business is about adapting.”
He continued: “We’ve been doing this for a long time. Things change. People move on.”
Reilly had a similar outlook on the shakeup. “It was a really difficult but really satisfying show to make,” she said. “And so was Yellowstone.”
Looking ahead, the actress wanted to focus on the positive. “So is anything worth making,” she concluded. “We’re all creative minds and we all work together and I’m so proud of that.”
Paramount+ later renewed Dutton Ranch for season 2 — but there hasn’t been a showrunner update yet.
Dutton Ranch isn’t the only Sheridan show to go through showrunner changes. Lioness, Tulsa King and Frisco King have also experienced shifts — and not every show had a showrunner season to season.
Dutton Ranch airs on Paramount+ Fridays.
