John Cena has “mixed feelings” after his trading card sold for a record breaking $329,400.
John Cena has mixed feelings about his trading card sale
The WWE legend turned Hollywood star, who retired in December 2025 after 23 years in the ring, appeared conflicted when he was asked about his one-of-one WrestleMania 41 patch autograph card, which recently broke the record for the highest public sale for any wrestling card.
He told Entertainment Tonight: “There’s a lot of expendable income out there, I think collectibles might be overvalued at some point.
“And, man, it’s really hard to put that into rational thought of excitement when a price like that for a card…
“But also, being an auto enthusiast I understand how, man, if you want it and you’re passionate about it and you’ve got the resources for it, it deems a price. I get that.”
When the reporter asked if he had “mixed feelings”, Cena agreed.
He added: “Goodness, yeah. It’s weird.”
The Matchbox The Movie actor suggested he was concerned the person who bought the card might try to sell it on.
He said: “I hope the person that used their resources to acquire that card has a lot of joy and connection to whatever they acquired, and is not using it as a commodity to possibly flip for future gain.”
Holding up his wedding band on camera, Cena stressed that “material things” only matter when we give them real meaning.
He explained: “I always say, material things are just material things, right? But we can give them meaning.
“As long as we have connection and meaning to the material thing, that’s important, and sometimes you can’t put a price on that.
“So, whoever you are who’s got the card, I just hope your material meaning is as strong as this rubber hoop.”
The unique card went up for auction via Goldin in August, and last month the collectible action site has confirmed it’s been sold for a staggering amount.
The company wrote on X: “Final Sale Price on this 2025 Topps Royalty WWE WrestleMania Patch Autographs John Cena Signed WrestleMania 41-Used Patch Card: $329,400.”
The winning bid itself was $270,000.
In the original listing, Goldin said: “Offered is one of the most iconic, fiercely coveted cards in the entire wrestling collecting hobby, John Cena’s ‘1/1,’ hard-signed Topps Royalty WWE WrestleMania Patch Autographs collectible.
“This ultra-premium piece features a multicolored WrestleMania 41-worn patch bearing the event’s legendary logo.
“Cena headlined the second night of the two-day extravaganza, defeating Cody Rhodes (with an assist from the blockbuster rapper Travis Scott) to claim his record-setting 17th WWE Championship, surpassing Ric Flair’s 16-title-belt record.”
The auction house noted that “WrestleMania Patch Autograph cards have quickly become the most ferociously sought-after cards in the hobby”.
The cards were launched at WrestleMania 41 last year, with wrestlers wearing a patch on their gear which was added to the trading card.
