Lauren Graham remembers a very different reception to Gilmore Girls than the one it gets today.
Lauren, who played Lorelai Gilmore, is looking back at the show’s original run and explaining why she thinks some viewers might never have given it a chance.
During the Tuesday (October 6) episode of Hey Dude… The ’90s Called! hosted by Christine Taylor and David Lascher, Lauren pushed back on the idea that the series was an immediate success, per People.
“What’s funny to me, too, is when people talk about the show, ‘that hit show.’ It was not a hit show then,” she said, arguing that for a “good long chunk” it aired opposite “must-see TV” like Friends.
Lauren went on to suggest that having “Girls” in the title might have led potential viewers to assume the show was aimed at women or younger audiences and that impression might have prevented people from discovering the “smart and well-written” show it really was.
“It was not a hit then. It was not a big deal. It had its followers, but it has grown in a way you could never have imagined,” she explained.
Gilmore Girls centered on her character and Alexis Bledel‘s Rory, a mother and daughter living in the fictional Connecticut town of Stars Hollow. It ran from 2000 to 2007 and was followed by the four-part Netflix revival Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life in 2016.
