Adults season two just debuted this week on FX, and fans are already clamoring for a third season.
The comedy series stars Malik Elassal, Lucy Freyer, Jack Innanen, Amita Rao, and Owen Thiele as a group of twenty-something friends living together in one of their childhood homes, and the eight-episode second season is now streaming in full on Hulu.
What happens in season two?
Over eight episodes, the housemates tackle a new set of real-world questions. What if the 20-year-old who inherited your fake ID is cooler than you ever were, and younger than you’ll ever be again? How do you explain to your friends that you actually love your boring office job? Why does being around your family make you regress into your worst self? And how do you ask for things to change, when you also need everything to stay the same? Together, the friends weave intricate webs of multi-player strategy just to avoid hurting someone else’s feelings. They invent elaborate workarounds for problems they’re too afraid to face head-on. It’s not so much that they keep learning the same lessons – it’s that they keep finding new ways to make mistakes. But the one thing they consistently get right: showing up for each other.
This season brought a slew of guest stars, including Gaten Matarazzo, Jake Shane, Zosia Mamet, Raven–Symoné, Isaac Cole Powell, Ben Marshall, and the return of Julia Fox as herself.
Is there going to be a third season?
At the time of this post, Adults has not yet been renewed for season three.
While the show has not been renewed yet, creators Ben Kronengold and Rebecca Shaw are looking forward to the show getting picked up by FX.
Season two ended on two cliffhangers – Anton and Paul Baker share a kiss (again), after PB watches Anton admit he has feelings for him on live TV. At the end of the finale, Issa hears two of the roommates hooking up and while she assumed it was Anton and Paul Baker, it was revealed that it was actually Billie and Samir.
There won’t be a major time jump in season three
“I think we’re really curious to see the pretty immediate results of [that] because our eye was on one ball, right?” he told Swoon. “Our eye was on Paul Baker and Anton, but meanwhile, something pretty explosive happened upstairs that’s going to have consequences for everyone.”
Rebecca teased what can happen in season three with those two couples.
“We always love giving ourselves a little bit of a challenge — letting these characters make decisions that feel right for them in the moment. But like so many decisions in your 20s, the decision that feels right in the moment one day means a lot of unraveling and analyzing or not analyzing to do the next day,” she told The Wrap. “We understand why all four of those people had the nights that they had in our finale, but I think now we really get to say, ‘What next?’ What is next for Billie and Samir is going to look really different than what is next for Anton and Paul Baker. They all made decisions that they can’t take back, which is always a really fun place to find ourselves.”
They already have ideas for season 3, even though they don’t have the green light yet
“We’ll start writing whenever anyone tells us to start writing. The truth is, we already have. What is so fun, even from Season 1 to Season 2, is that there’s so many stories that you couldn’t fit into the first eight episodes, and I think we feel the same way about this,” Rebecca shared with The Wrap. “There’s so many ideas that made us laugh, things that came up on set — ideas, jokes, backstories, combinations of characters, ways that they could all ricochet off of each other. That’s all just to say we’ve got a lot of stories in mind, and we’re ready to tell them as soon as anyone will let us.”
Ben and Rebecca address fan calls for a higher episode count.
“We’ll write as many episodes as we are given … I think even getting to do this prequel, nine felt better than eight. The more stories we get to tell, the more that we get to live with these characters, the better,” Rebecca told The Wrap.
Ben added, “We see fans asking for ‘filler episodes,’ which is so funny and kind of media-literate, right? … We didn’t get to do that this time around, but that is something that we aspire to do in the lineage of sitcoms that came before us. What are the off days like? The more seasons — not just more episodes, but the more seasons that we have — the more we get to play around with the fluff.”
