Meta is agreeing to pay up to $17.1 billion and make major changes to both Facebook and Instagram.
The Mark Zuckerberg-owned company has settled a lawsuit brought forward by 29 states claiming that the social media platforms were designed to be addictive for kids harming their mental health, improperly collected their personal data, and misled users about safety, per the New York Times.
As a result, Meta has pledged to “limit how long teenagers can spend on its platforms and to bans on features that stoke mental health issues.”
They will also “enhance measures to prevent” children from seeing age-restricted content.
The settlement includes the resolution of lawsuits brought forward by California, Illinois, New Mexico and Washington, D.C. related to Cambridge Analytica, after the consulting form collected personal data of millions of Facebook users. Reuters reports that those states will get $459.3 million, per Reuters.
Meta argued that “social media addiction” is not a recognized psychiatric condition in the proceedings.
Meta, Snapchat and TikTok still face thousands of lawsuits in federal and state ?courts over claims that they fueled a mental health crisis with addictive features.
Last year, Meta denied that Facebook and Instagram users were forced to follow accounts for the Trump administration.
