Nicholas Hoult has joined the cast of the upcoming Harry Potter television series!

HBO is turning the beloved book series into a seven-season TV adaptation, giving each novel its own season of television. The first season has already been filmed and will premiere during the Christmas 2026 season. Season two is set to begin filming in Fall 2026.

Deadline has confirmed that Nicholas will be playing the role of Gilderoy Lockhart, who was introduced in the second book, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Kenneth Branagh portrayed the villainous character in the movie adaptation back in 2002. In the wizarding world, he was best known as an author on books about dark creatures and he becomes the Professor of Defense Against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts.

This will likely be a one-season role for Nicholas as Lockhart is mainly featured in the one book, though he does later make a brief appearance in book five, Order of the Phoenix, as a patient at St. Mungo’s Hospital.

Nicholas got his start on television in the British teen drama Skins and he later earned an Emmy nomination for his work in the Hulu comedy series The Great. He’ll next be seen in the movie How to Rob a Bank, in theaters this November.
