The Prince and Princess of Wales “embarrass” their children.
The Wales family at the Commonwealth Games
Prince William and his wife Catherine took all three of their kids, Prince George, 13, Princess Charlotte, 11, and eight-year-old Prince Louis to watch the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland on Saturday (01.08.26), and the group discussed their various sporting pursuits during a meeting with Team Wales athletes.
Earlier, William and Catherine had met Sir Chris Hoy and Dame Laura Kenny at the velodrome, and Catherine revealed the latter had suggested: “Come and give it a go!”
The princess laughed: “I did say be careful what you wish for as they want to put us on a tandem bike in the velodrome.”
Presenter Gethin Jones, one of the Welsh team officials, said: “Oh please, please can we absolutely make that happen.”
Para-athlete Olivia Breen joked: “It’s that or you have to run the London marathon.”
William replied: “Fair enough. Well if that’s the ultimatum, riding a tandem bike, definitely!”
And when the five were given a goodie bag featuring the Welsh cycling outfit, Olivia joked the prince and princess could wear them when they ride the tandem, prompting William to quip: “You know me and Lycra!”
He pulled the top out of the bag, only to find he was clutching one of the children’s outfits and he joked: “I won’t whip the shorts out.”
Gethin then asked the children: “Would you like to see mum and dad on a tandem in the velodrome later?”
Without hesitation, George exclaimed: “No!”
His mother burst out laughing, while his father admitted:
George immediately replied: “No!”
Kate, seated beside him, burst out laughing while his father admitted: “We embarrass you enough as it is.”
The children also discussed their own sporting achievements, though Louis admitted his had been belittled by his sister.
As they spoke to gymnasts, Catherine turned to her youngest son and said: “Louis, you’re perfecting your handstand at the moment.”
He replied: “A bit. But Charlotte says I’m no good.”
Twin gymnasts Abigail and Emily Roper asked if Charlotte can do one and she confirmed she could, but when George was asked if he could do a handstand, he and Catherine laughed as he said: “I’m rubbish at anything that involves flexibility.”
Charlotte – who was presented with a signed leotard – told the twins her favourite part of gymnastics is the floor and her mother added: “Charlotte likes her dancing.”
William said: “She loves gymnastics and ballet.”
As Catherine stayed with the gymnasts, William and the children sat down with Olivia, fellow para-athlete Aled Davies, and 400m runner Charlotte Henrich.
Louis told them he had recently taken part in his first sports day at school, while George revealed his favourite event is javelin.
As Catherine joined them at the table, she was told: “Louis was saying he likes high jump.”
She asked: “Louis, you like high jump?”
He replied he did and William joked: “That’s news to us!”
