Jay-Z played his third anniversary show at Yankee Stadium on Sunday night (July 12) in New York City, called “Extra Innings,” but fans were forced to wait nearly four hours until he took to the stage.
Viral videos circulated on social media taken from outside of the venue throughout the evening, where tons of people were seen waiting for hours to get into the show, including celebrities like A$AP Rocky and Fabolous.
The reason? Fans rushed the venue’s gates causing a security breach, per Variety.
A police source later told ABC7 that “a large group broke through security, prompting a full lockdown of the stadium. For a while, no one was allowed in or out.”
“I appreciate your patience. We gonna have a good time. I got some s–t for you, I promise you,” Jay announced as the show finally began at roughly 12:20 a.m.
“There was like ten thousand people outside, and they closed all the doors ‘cuz [people] rushed the door, and I didn’t want to start music and have people get trampled. I’m really sorry for the inconvenience.”
Fans were in for quite a treat when the show did finally kick off, as Jay-Z hosted a ton of surprise performers throughout the night’s 40+ song set of hits, including wife Beyoncé and even a rare musical moment from Rihanna, who hasn’t hit the stage in years.
