After Backrooms and Obsession held the top spots at the box office for the past two weekends, Scary Movie 6 took the throne this weekend with a $55 million opening. It’s a record opening for the franchise, and made an additional $50.5 million in overseas markets, despite being thrashed critically.
Second place belonged to the newcomer Masters of the Universe, which made $29.3 million against a $200 million budget. Because it’s an Amazon film, it is not as reliant on box office as other films may be, but it will certainly hope to bring in more audiences in future weekends after a disappointing start, despite warm reviews from critics and audiences alike.
Backrooms took the third spot with $29.5 million, a 70% drop from the first weekend. The film has made $135 million domestic and $212.6 million globally, overtaking A24’s biggest film to date Marty Supreme.
In the fourth spot was Obsession, which fell a mere 7% from last weekend in its fourth weekend of release with a $25.6 million take. This film’s insane box office run continues with a total take of $152.1 million in North America, and will surpass $200 million globally this weekend.
Rounding out the top five was Fathom’s The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act with $19.4 million. The most recent Star Wars entry The Mandalorian and Grogu fell to sixth place in its third weekend of release with $10 million, bringing its total box office to $155.8 million domestically and $293.6 million globally.
