Benny Blanco proposed to Selena Gomez with a $200,000 engagement ring, which features a special reference to one of her songs.
The music producer, 36, proposed to Selena, 32, with a marquise-shaped diamond stone set on a gold pavé band. Experts at UK retailer Steven Stone estimated that the diamond is about “four carats,” which explains its hefty price tag.
“With meticulously crafted facets that come together to create an exceptional brilliance, the center stone is complimented by diamond-encrusted shoulders,” expert Maxwell Stone said in a statement about the ring. “While marquise-cut diamonds are less common than the more traditional round or cushion cuts, they are highly coveted by those with a taste for individuality and distinction.”
The lemon-shaped diamond cut originates back to the 18th century and it has royal ties. According to Vogue, King Louis XV of France tasked his jeweler to design a diamond that was inspired by his chief mistress Marquise de Pompadour’s smile.
Not only did Benny spend a significant amount of money on the accessory, but fans also noticed that the diamond cut may be a nod to Selena’s 2015 hit song “Good for You.”
“I’m on my marquise diamonds,” Selena sings on the track, which features A$AP Rocky. “I’m a marquise diamond / Could even make that Tiffany jealous / You say I give it to you hard / So bad, so bad / Make you never wanna leave / I won’t, I won’t.”
Selena announced her engagement to Benny after one year of dating by sharing photos of the ring via Instagram on Wednesday, December 11. “Forever begins now …” she wrote alongside the sweet snapshots, which also included a photo of the couple cuddling as she flashed her ring at the camera.
Several of Selena’s famous friends took to the comments section to congratulate the couple, while Benny chimed in, “Hey wait… that’s my wife.”
The lovebirds first confirmed their romance in December 2023 after the pair collaborated on her song “Single Soon,” which was released in August of that year.
“[Benny has] been the best thing that’s ever happened to me,” Selena gushed via Instagram at the time while discussing their romance. “He’s still better than anyone I’ve been with. Facts.”
Even before they revealed their plans to wed, rumors had swirled that the couple was planning to get engaged in the near future. In November, an insider exclusively told Life & Style that Selena had “a clear vision of what she wants” for their wedding. “An outdoor ceremony, two dresses, and tables and tables of amazing food,” the source explained.
The couple wants their wedding guests to be well fed, as the insider explained that the “last thing Benny and Selena want is their guests leaving hungry.”
Additionally, the Wizards of Waverly Place alum “would like a signature scent for the big day.” The source shared that she wants “a perfume that’s sprayed on everything and that people get to bring home!”
An additional source exclusively told Life & Style that she was “telling friends that Benny’s The One” before their engagement. The insider explained that Benny is “supportive and lets Selena be herself,” adding that he’s “kind, generous, sincere and loyal.”
