    • A while ago, LOTR cast members Dominic Monaghan (Merry) and Billy Boyd (Pippin) were promoting their podcast to IGN “The Friendship Onion.”
    • During this interview, they revealed that director Peter Jackson faced significant pressure to deviate from JRR Tolkien’s original story.
    • This pressure included suggestions to kill off one of the hobbit characters. Dominic Monaghan knew it would have been him, saying that, “There’s no way they are killing Frodo and Sam, and the only ones that would be left would be Merry and Pippin. They wouldn’t kill Pippin because Pippin has a really strong story with Gandalf. It would have definitely been me.”
    • However, Jackson decided to stay true to Tolkien’s text, with all the hobbits surviving until the end of the story. “I think Pete quite rightly was like, ‘This is a luminary piece of written work, and we need to stick close to the text.’ So, he stuck by his guns. Yeah, I’m thankful that didn’t happen.”
