- This Friday CBC has planned to air a documentary on singer-songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie calling into question her indigenous identity.
- The description for the episode says: Buffy Sainte-Marie’s claims to Indigenous ancestry are being called into question by family members and an investigation that included genealogical documentation, historical research and personal accounts.
- Sainte-Marie’s birth origins have always been murky by her own admission. She did not know her birth parents and came to be raised by white American parents. It is believed she was an early victim of the Sixties Scoop, the colloquial name given to Canadian governmental policy that snatched First Nations children from their birth families and placed them with white families
- At the age of 23 she was adopted into the Piapot family who are a part of Cree Nation (the adoption was done in accordance with Cree customs and is not formally recognized by the Canadian government)
- In her statement Sainte-Marie said as her birth was not fully documented she has no way of knowing her origins but maintains she is proud of her Indigenous identity and reaffirms her adoption into a Cree family and her committment to promoting Indigenous and Native American causes
- Says CBCs questioning has been painful and a violation
- Two members of the Piapot family have come forward to defend Sainte-Marie as their aunt and a part of the Cree community:
