The people love a down on his luck friendly neighborhood superhero. Spider-Man: Brand New Day fell just 45% from last weekend for a total take of $39 million, bringing its domestic gross to $854 million and its global take to $2.22 billion. Domestically, it is possible that the film ends up becoming the top grossing film of all time – it would need to surpass $936 million to beat 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

In the second spot was new release Insidious: Out of the Further, which brought in $25.3 million in its first weekend. The film is the sixth in a series, and this one falls short of the opening weekend of the last installment, 2023’s Insidious: The Red Door, which brought in $33 million in its opening weekend. Fortunately, this installment cost only $18 million to produce, so it shouldn’t be too tough for it to turn a profit.

Third place belonged to The Odyssey, which fell a scant 17% for $19.5 million domestic in its sixth weekend of release. The R-rated epic has made $539 million in North America so far, and is a stunning success story at this year’s box office.

The fourth and fifth spots went to Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie and The End of Oak Street, each making approximately $9 million in their second weekend. While The Dino Movie is reporting a razor thin edge right now with $9.1 million, we won’t know for sure who won until Monday. Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie has made $35.4 million domestic so far, while The End of Oak Street has made nearly $40 million in North America.

New releases Mutiny and Spa Weekend both fared poorly in their debut weekends, bringing in $7.5 million and $3.1 million, respectively. Mutiny was accidentally uploaded in full to Amazon Prime for a time, so there are pristine pirated copies floating around.

In indie news, Tony brought in $5 million in its first weekend of expansion, bringing its total grosses to $6.6 million. And Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma brought in $1.9 million, bringing its grosses to $3.7 million.
