The new movie The Last House is currently the #1 film on Netflix and fans might have some questions after watching the horror flick. Let’s answer them!
The Last House follows a family of four who are suddenly sealed inside their home with no way out, and must work together to survive against both their dwindling resources and the mysterious, looming threat that is keeping them trapped.
Wagner Moura and Greta Lee lead the movie, which takes place almost completely inside the one location.

There are creatures outside in the rain
At the beginning of the movie, a rainstorm is happening outside when the family realizes that they’re trapped inside. It appears that the rain is what’s keeping houses everywhere sealed shut.
It also becomes clear that there are spooky creatures that arrive whenever the rain falls.
So, who are the creatures? They come from the ocean, not from space. They are not aliens as they have been on Earth longer than humans have been here.
Director Louis Leterrier told Netflix Tudum, “They’ve been there way before us. We are living on their planet… We think that it’s an invasion movie, but we realize that we’re the aliens.”

Why are the creatures coming to land now?
Tudum explains, “After humans overconsumed, polluted the environment, raised global temperatures, and began ‘boiling the oceans,’ the creatures finally emerged from the depths.”
It seems like this is a response to global warming and the creatures’ response to ending pollution.
The daughter, Ruth, also explains a theory she comes up with in the movie: “80 percent of the ocean is unexplored. What if these things aren’t from outer space? What if these tales of sea creatures are real? What if that’s why they can control the rain? They’re not conquering our world. This is their world.”

What happens to the family?
After months of rationing food, the family reaches the point where they are starving. Jason, the dad, figures out a way to go “fishing” through their chimney thanks to cracks in the house’s foundation. Using traps he engineers with household items, Jason figures out a way to hunt for animals, finally finding a way to feed his family.
There’s then a flash forward to five years in the future and the family is still going strong in their house. They’ve figured out how to grow crops inside the house, helping them sustain their food supply.
Near the end of the film, the family decides that they need to find a way out of the house as they’re not living an enjoyable life inside anymore. They basically “Home Alone” their house to figure out a way to trap the creature after luring it inside the home.

How the family finally escapes and why the creatures let them outside…
The family’s plan to trap the creature works. After a huge struggle, leading to their house flooding from the rainwater, they have the creature tied up. Jason holds a knife to the creature and demands that it open the door to let them outside.
In this moment, Jason thinks back to what his daughter Ruth said about there being nice creatures and that this is likely their world.
Jason decides to show mercy to the creature and lets it go. The creature escapes the home and leaves the door open for the family to finally leave the house too. When they go outside, they are surrounded by other creatures, but the creature they spared tells the other ones to leave them alone. The creatures escape to the sea and never return.
The movie ends with the family seeing that their city is now under water. They take a neighbor’s boat and use it to sail out to sea in search of a new life.
One important character in the movie did sadly die.
