Rebecca Luna has bravely passed away on her own terms.
The TikTok creator and influencer died on Saturday (July 25) at the age of 49 following an early-onset Alzheimer’s diagnosis. She chose medical aid in dying (MAID), and made that decision public, documenting her experience over the past months.
“Rebecca passed away July 25th at approximately 1:15 p.m. surrounded by her loved ones. Thank you for your support and privacy,” a message confirmed on her account over the weekend. Her GoFundMe in her account also supplied an update, written by Maya, her eldest daughter.
“Young-Onset Alzheimer’s and MAID Advocate,” her bio reads.
What is MAID?
“Medical aid in dying is an end-of-life healthcare option in which a mentally capable, terminally ill adult may request a prescription from their healthcare provider for a medication they can choose to ingest to die peacefully,” per Compassion & Choices.
“All U.S. medical aid in dying laws require a terminal diagnosis with a prognosis of six months or less to live. This is a defining feature of medical aid in dying as practiced in the United States.”
What did Rebecca Luna say about her diagnosis?
Rebecca provided the reasoning for her GoFundMe as “End of Life Expenses.”
She wrote:
Hi, as a lot of you know I was diagnosed at age 48 with Young Onset Alzheimer’s. I’m 49 and I will be accessing MAID as my decline has come faster than I had hoped. I’ve been a single mama (proudly) all my life so My lovely followers suggested I do a go fund me for the end of life expenses so I don’t leave my loved ones behind with that responsibility on top of their own grief. All blessings and well wishes are warmly appreciated and I love you all. I couldn’t have come this far without you.
Throughout dozens of videos, Rebecca opened up about her experience with the diagnosis, doctor appointments, and educating viewers about end-of-life options.
Earlier in the week, she confirmed she moved her MAID date from early August to this weekend.
What did Rebecca Luna say in her final video?
“Prior to the dates changing for the last year and a half has been legally and medically not my choice. But for the last two weeks I’ve been making the decision. And it’s a hard decision to make, because I’m living in a body that doesn’t feel comfortable, safe, good, nothing. It feels terrible. And so the idea of waiting two weeks felt like too much,” she confirmed in her final video.
“This is when I get to prioritize myself, and I haven’t done that my whole life,” she added.
Rebecca said she was standing up for the 5-year-old version of herself that “nobody stood up for.”
“I hope if I leave this planet that’s the only thing I teach — and that’s the only thing that somebody gets something out of — is that you just need to act your way into loving yourself. If I can do it, you can do it too,” she shared in her final words to her audience.
