Jerry O’Connell has apologised to ex-girlfriend Giuliana Rancic for being a “terrible boyfriend.”
Jerry O’Connell was a ‘terrible’ boyfriend
The 52-year-old actor dated the entertainment reporter from 2003 to 2004 and she memorably revealed in her memoir that he had cheated on her and then ended their relationship over an intercom, and Jerry has admitted he doesn’t blame her for being critical of his conduct because he was “the worst”.
Speaking on the Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast, Jerry noted he and Juliana had “had a lot of fun together”, but added: “Now listen, in Giuliana Rancic’s defence of this memoir, I was a pretty terrible boyfriend. Hand up, I was not a good boyfriend.
“Let me take this moment to apologise to Giuliana Rancic. I’m not kidding about being a terrible boyfriend. I was the worst. I wasn’t the worst boyfriend. I was just a bad boyfriend. I was just not a great boyfriend.”
Jerry went on to defend his decision not to break up with Guliana face-to-face.
He said: “I broke up with her through an intercom because Giuliana Rancic came to my condominium and hit my intercom. I was not expecting Giuliana Rancic… [She] wanted entry into my condominium. Thank goodness, buzzer, gate, security. I paid a pretty hefty homeowner’s fee for these things.
“I said, ‘I did not know you were coming. You can’t come up here. You can’t come here unannounced.’ Notice no one had a key, so the relationship was not like that, but that was why: I didn’t like someone coming to my condominium without an invite or even a text or even a phone call… There was no warning. And I didn’t want someone coming in, because I didn’t want any confrontation.”
But he suggested he hadn’t been quite as blunt and brutal as his former flame suggested in her tome.
Host Kelly Ripa read from Giuliana’s 2016 book Going Off Script, in which she alleged the Stand By Me actor had said: “Nope. Sorry, home girl. Things change, but you take care, okay?”
Jerry replied: “I don’t recall exact wording, so I can’t deny that I said that. It doesn’t sound like something I would say. I mean, if I were writing a memoir, it made for a good quote.
“I’m going to applaud Giuliana for using colourful dialogue and everything.”
The Summer’s Last Resort actor – who married Rebecca Romijn, the mother of his 17-year-old twin daughters Charlie and Dolly, in 2007 – admitted he had crossed paths with Giuliana a number of times after their break-up because they went to the same gym, and he used to deliberately try and annoy her.
He said: “I would see Giuliana sometimes at Equinox, and I do this really funny thing. Everybody should do this with exes. It’s really funny.”
Jerry would “walk right up” to his former flame “nose to nose” and pretend to flirt with her in an over-the-top voice.
He said: “It would annoy her so much. She would be like, ‘Get the f*** away.’
“She would be like, ‘Go away. Stop it.’ And I would be like ‘Oh gosh I miss you. Do you have the same number?’”
