Justine Wilson is opening up about the very public rift between ex-husband Elon Musk and their daughter Vivian Jenna Wilson.
If you were unaware, Vivian, 22, came out as transgender in 2020 and legally filed to change her name and gender in 2022. In 2024, Elon, 55, made headlines when he said that Vivian was “dead” and “killed by the woke mind virus.”
Justine – who was married to Elon from 2000 to 2008 – recently participated in Oscar-winning documentarian Alex Gibney‘s new project Musk and said that Vivian and Elon‘s difficult relationship goes back to when the model/activist was a young child.
“She is extremely strong-willed,” Justine said of her daughter. “Elon and I had five kids and the one who was most openly defiant was Jenna [Vivian’s middle name].”
Justine goes on to say that when Vivian was 6-years-old, Elon told her, “In this world there are winners and losers. Do you want to be a winner or do you want to be a loser?”
“The subtext there was, ‘If you do not follow me and do what I say, you will be a loser,’ ” Justine added.
Also in the new doc, which Elon did not participate and has very publicly denounced, Justine talked about the “pain” Vivian felt after the Tesla CEO said that she was “killed by the woke mind virus.”
“Elon was telling her, through telling the world, what that point of view actually was,” Justine explained. “And Elon never tried to repair things, that’s not in his nature.”
“If a relationship ruptures, then it ruptures,” Justine said of her ex-husband’s perspective.
She also said that Elon treated Vivian‘s transition like the “death of a child.”
“I was like, ‘We actually went through the actual death of an actual child,’” Justine said, referring to her and Elon‘s son Nevada, who died of sudden infant death syndrome in 2002 at 10 weeks old. “‘And what’s really happening here is this is a child growing up.’”
Justine claimed that Elon told her to tell Vivian that “I’ll always love her” – then cut off her health insurance the next day, after Vivian came out as trans.
On a broader aspect, Justine reflected on what Elon might have been grappling with with their daughter.
“If you do your job right as a parent, you get displaced by their life, which is no longer your life,” Justine said. “There’s a lot of emotion involved with that.”
Musk will be out in theaters nationwide on October 16.
