Penelope Cruz is stepping out to promote her new movie at the 2026 BFI London Film Festival!
The 52-year-old Oscar-winning actress went chic in a black and white outfit by Ralph Lauren for the latest premiere of her new movie La Bola Negra (which translates to The Black Ball) on Thursday (October 8) held at The Royal Festival Hall in London, England.
Fellow cast members in attendance included Guitarricadelafuente and Miguel Bernardeau along with co-directors Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi.
What is La Bola Negra about?
La Bola Negra was co-directed, co-written and produced by the Spanish duo Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi (popularly known as Los Javis). They won the Best Director award at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival and the film was nominated for the Palme d’Or.
A bold tapestry spanning nearly a century of Spanish history, La Bola Negra tells the story of three generations of men whose lives are intimately connected through desire, pain, and love. The film takes place in three different eras – 1932, 1937, and 2017.
The movie is getting tons of Oscars buzz!
Following the movie’s initial premieres at film festivals Cannes, Telluride, and TIFF earlier this year, La Bola Negra has received rave reviews and is already getting tons of 2027 Oscars buzz!
“A deeply moving and profound uncovering of queer history, personal and cultural, and a reckoning with Spain’s past…a breathtaking queer epic,” one critic wrote on Rotten Tomatoes.
Another critic wrote, “The cast is uniformly terrific: every cast member eschews excess to convey the complex dance between terror, subversion and defiance that defined queer love and desire for so much of the 20th century.”
It has already been selected as Spain’s entry for Best International Feature Film at next year’s Oscars.
Kalshi is predicting that the Best Picture race is between La Bola Negra and The Odyssey.
When will La Bola Negra be released?
La Bola Negra has a U.S. theatrical release on October 16 ahead of a Netflix streaming premiere on December 2, marking the longest theatrical window ever for a Netflix movie!
