In news that did not come as a surprise to another who tracks box office data, Verity was the biggest new release of the weekend. The film marks another box office success for a Colleen Hoover adaptation, bringing in $32.6 million domestic and another $30 million overseas, a great opening for the $40 million film. Audience and critical reception was largely unfavorable, with 34% on Rotten Tomatoes and a C+ Cinemascore, but turnout was still excellent.
Meanwhile, the much-balleyhooed Digger ultimately did even worse than most expectations, playing to many nearly empty theaters and bringing in only $8 million in North America for the fifth spot at the box office. International markets did not fare better, with only $12 million from 73 countries, for a total opening for $20 million against a budget of at least $160 million. This could be one of the biggest box office bombs of all time, and marks a sad end for Warner Bros as we know it, before it’s gobbled up by Doug Ellison.
In the second spot at the box office was Resident Evil, bringing in another $12.5 million this weekend. So far, it has made $124.8 million domestic and $215 million worldwide against a budget of $70 million.
Third place belonged to Heart of the Beast, which collected $11 million in its second weekend of release. The film has made $38.3 million in North America and $98.6 million globally on an $82 million budget, so it will need staying power to be profitable for Paramount.
Primetime took the fourth spot with an $8 million take, falling 58% from its opening last weekend. The A24 film has made $34 million domestic on a $15 million budget, and has yet to open in many international markets.
