Jon Watts will allegedly direct the first installment of a new Star Wars trilogy, which will be penned by Simon Kinberg. Kinberg has been attached to the project since 2024. THR reports that it appears to be an extension of the Skywalker saga, with Daisy Ridley expected to return as Rey in some capacity. Watts is best known for directing the first three Tom Holland Spiderman movies and previously co-created the Star Wars television series Skeleton Crew.
While reputable trades have now confirmed this, post-2019 Star Wars movies often stall in development after reliable reports (like this one, this one, and all of these three). It remains to be seen if this trilogy will come to fruition. In the meantime, the Ryan Gosling-fronted Star Wars: Starfighter is set to be the franchise’s next theatrical outing next May.
