She recalled “how hard we worked,” and added: “Between you and me, it didn’t do very well, so I hope you guys like it.” Watch the video right here.

The 1969 film adaptation, directed by Bob Fosse, was indeed a major box office bomb: it cost an estimated $20 million to make and grossed only about $8 million during its theatrical run, resulting in a loss for Universal Pictures.

“Today it seems ahead of its time with startling cinematic effects that literally make the camera one of the dancers,” TCM notes.

When Did Shirley MacLaine Last Appear in Public?

After a career spanning over 70 years, Shirley has been enjoying life out of the spotlight in recent years.

Her last appearance was last year at the inaugural Dance Hall of Fame induction ceremony, where she received a Lifetime Achievement Award, named after herself in her honor.

Her last acting roles were in 2022 when she appeared in Season 2 of Only Murders in the Building. That same year, she starred alongside Peter Dinklage in the comedy film American Dreamer.

She also made a rare public outing for lunch back in November.
