Olivia Wilde hits the red carpet at the 2026 Locarno Film Festival on Saturday (August 8) in Locarno, Switzerland.

The 42-year-old actress and director stepped out for a screening and press conference at the festival for her movie The Invite.

Prior to the screening, Olivia spoke out about making sure the movie had a theatrical release.

“They bribe you to not take theatrical,” she said, via The Hollywood Reporter. “We have to fight for it.”

“It’s a bribe. They pay you more,” Olivia added. “Not the filmmaker, no; the financiers will get a lot more money to go to streaming, and you can take that bribe and give that up if that’s where your priorities lie. But we were really lucky that our financier gave me the opportunity to make this decision, which is something I don’t take lightly. She could have very easily said no.”

She went on to praise A24, who released the movie.

“A24 has been extraordinary because they really believe in the theatrical game,” the filmmaker said. “FilmNation made the international deals around the world, all theatrical. So all these great distributors around the planet have invested in this film being seen in theaters. So, I’m very grateful.”

“There is no genre that benefits from the communal [viewing] experience more than comedy,” Olivia adds, noting comedies have often “been delegated to that second tier that really doesn’t deserve cinema.”

In addition to directing, Olivia also starred in The Invite, alongside Seth Rogen, Penelope Cruz, and Edward Norton.

The movie centers on married couple Joe (Rogen) and Angela (Wilde), whose relationship is struggling when they decide to host their mysterious upstairs neighbors, Hawk (Norton) and Pina (Cruz), for dinner.

According to the official synopsis, “Joe and Angela’s marriage is on thin ice. When they invite their enigmatic upstairs neighbors for a dinner party, the night spirals into unexpected places. Have they reignited the spark or lit the match that burns it all down?”

The Invite is still playing in theaters and will likely be released on HBO Max in a couple of months as part of A24’s streaming deal with the platform. There are also reports that the movie will arrive on VOD and digital platforms on Tuesday (August 11), but this is not confirmed.
