Nick Reiner is reportedly ‘unrecognisable’ and in rapidly declining physical and mental health
As he awaits trial in jail on charges alleging he murdered his parents – filmmaker Rob Reiner, 79, and Michele Reiner, 70 – claims made by a source close to the family state the troubled 32-year-old is struggling with his time in jail.
Nick has been held at the Los Angeles Twin Towers Correctional Facility since December 2025 after being charged over the fatal stabbings of Rob and Michele at their home in Brentwood, California.
He has pleaded not guilty and is awaiting trial.
Prosecutors are seeking either life imprisonment without the possibility of parole or the death penalty if he is convicted.
The latest claims about his condition were published by the Daily Mail.
Nick’s case has drawn significant attention because of Rob’s long career as one of Hollywood’s most celebrated filmmakers, directing films including When Harry Met Sally…, Stand by Me, Misery and A Few Good Men, while also starring as Michael “Meathead” Stivic in the television sitcom All in the Family.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, a source close to the family claimed: “Nick no longer looks like Nick. He is rapidly deteriorating. No one would recognise him.”
The source added: “He is almost bald because they have to keep his hair super short to keep the bugs out, and he is super skinny because of the intense medication he is on. His eyes are very sunken in.”
The same source also alleged Nick’s mental health had worsened during his time in custody.
They added: “Nick has not been well for many years.”
The source also said: “But before jail some of his personality could be recognised. Not now. He is like a babbling child, totally out of it. It’s so bad his lawyers have a hard time talking to him.”
According to the report, Nick’s siblings, Jake Reiner and Romy Reiner, are said to be concerned about his condition.
The source alleged they fear “he will never be sane again and that he could possibly die as his heart could weaken from the constant strain”.
Nick was diagnosed with schizophrenia and had a history of drug addiction at the time of his parents’ murders.
It has also been reported he had previously damaged his mother and father’s mansion during what was described as a methamphetamine-fuelled incident.
Nick is said to have argued with Rob and Michele at Conan O’Brien’s home the day before they were slaughtered.
Sources previously told the New York Post Nick had “freaked out”, with Rob reportedly telling guests he was “scared” by his son’s “deteriorating” mental state.
Rob and Michele were found dead after being stabbed at their Brentwood home on 14 December 2025. Their daughter, Romy, discovered their bodies.
After entering a plea of not guilty in February, Nick requested access to his reported $1.5 million trust fund to pay his legal fees while awaiting trial.
The Daily Mail also cited a former inmate who had previously been held at the Los Angeles Twin Towers Correctional Facility.
The former inmate said: “Inmates constantly scream night and day – they don’t shut up. There is no mute button.”
They added: “The noise really gets to you, it rocks your nervous system because it’s weird, like howling and all the profanity and sick sex talk.”
The former inmate also claimed conditions inside the prison become particularly cold during the winter months and that prisoners have little exposure to natural sunlight.
