The man accused of killing actor John Handy has been found mentally incompetent to stand trial.
According to records viewed by Us Weekly, Michael Gledhill had a competency hearing on Monday, June 22, in Hollywood. Prior to the hearing, Gledhill, 44, underwent a mental health evaluation, which determined he was incompetent.
Following the results of the mental health evaluation, Judge Maria Cavalluzzi ruled that Gledhill does not understand the case against him, making him unable to assist his lawyer in his defense. Cavalluzzi also found that Gledhill cannot make proper medication decisions.
The judge signed an order saying Gledhill could be involuntarily medicated for one year, following a psychiatrist’s determination that his mental health could be improved by proper medication. (Michael’s mother and Handy’s girlfriend, Wendy Gledhill, previously told TMZ that her son was diagnosed with schizophrenia but had stopped taking his medication amid mental health struggles.)
Michael has not entered a plea and has yet to appear in court. His next court date is scheduled for July 14, during which the judge will determine his long-term placement.
Us has reached out to Michael’s lawyer for comment.
Earlier this month, Handy died after being fatally stabbed. He was 81.
“With great sadness I can confirm that the gentleman who was attacked and killed on Wednesday in Tarzana was the actor James Handy,” Handy’s spokesperson said in a statement to Us.
According to a statement from the police, the Top Gun: Maverick actor was killed at a home in Los Angeles on June 3, after being stabbed by Michael.
“On Wednesday, June 3, 2026, around 9:30 a.m., West Valley area patrol officers responded to a radio call of unknown trouble in the 19200 block of Erwin Street. The 911 caller stated, ‘I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin.’ Upon their arrival, officers discovered 81-year-old James Handy in the front yard of the residence, unconscious and suffering from a stab wound to his chest,” read a statement from the Los Angeles Police Department. “The victim was transported to a local hospital by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics, where he was pronounced deceased.”

Michael was arrested and booked on one count of murder. Bail was set at $2 million.
Days later, Wendy, 76, broke her silence on Handy’s death and Michael’s alleged involvement.
