Masters of the Universe features a special surprise for longtime fans.
Spoilers ahead for those who haven’t seen Masters of the Universe.
In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Travis Knight and star Nicholas Galitzine opened up about Dolph Lundgren‘s cameo in the new film, which is now playing in theaters.
Dolph famously portrayed He-Man in the 1987 live-action Masters of the Universe movie. In the new film, he appears during a montage showing Prince Adam’s life on Earth before embracing his destiny.
Nicholas revealed he suggested bringing Dolph into the movie, only to learn Travis had already been working on the idea.
“I seem to remember sort of quite brightly going to [director Travis Knight] and going, ‘You know what would be a great idea, is if we had Dolph Lundgren in the movie,’” Nicholas told the outlet.
Travis said the cameo ultimately became a meaningful moment between the franchise’s past and present He-Men.
“I never knew that I’d be able to convince Dolph Lundgren to be in our movie. I certainly had hoped that we could get Dolph to be in the movie, and it was something that I’d been working for for a long time,” Travis said, explaining that Dolph also contributed ideas that helped shape the scene.
Nicholas described the interaction as “a very real passing of the torch.”
“I hope Dolph feels this way, but there was a very real passing of the torch, which felt very special, certainly for me,” he told EW.
Nicholas also recently opened up about the advice he was given by Hugh Jackman and how he really feels about being called a “heartthrob.”
