Hannah Waddingham is shutting down the rumors that she was considered for the role of Madame Morrible in the Wicked movies.
The Emmy-winning Ted Lasso actress actually got her start as a musical theatre actress, with three Olivier Award nominations for Best Actress in a Musical to her name.
When the Wicked movies were in the casting process, fans had her on their dream-cast lists for the role of Morrible, but the role went to Michelle Yeoh.
In a new interview, Hannah addressed the rumors surrounding the casting speculation and confirmed she never even auditioned for the role.
“No, I didn’t! This is the funniest thing. We can put this to bed once and for all,” she told Variety.
Hannah actually has been friends with Cynthia Erivo for more than a decade as they worked together on a musical in London’s West End in 2015. They talked about the role during the casting process, but Michelle had already earned the role.
“I was like, ‘I think it’s gone.’ She was like, ‘Dude, I think it’s gone as well,’” Hannah said. “I would have loved to have been seen for that, but it was a fait accompli, as they say.”
Hannah says she still wants to do a movie musical and she has one in mind, but won’t reveal it. “There is, but I’m keeping it under my hat because I want to do it. Goddamn it!” she said.
