A concerned woman feels like she is being taken advantage of by a cousin after giving her and her new husband a very generous wedding gift.
Taking to Reddit‘s “Am I the A–hole” forum, the woman explained that both she and her cousin were in their 20s. Though they had “never been close” and were mostly “just polite” with each other, she said that they shared “basic civility.”
Despite that, the Redditor decided to give the newlyweds an extremely generous wedding gift — she funded their honeymoon to Bora Bora. While the bride was initially thrilled with the gift, the situation turned sour once they arrived for their vacation.
The woman was just trying to help out
In her post, the woman said that she and her cousin were not tight. However, her mom and her cousin’s mom, who died during the pandemic, were. After that, the woman said her mom became “very emotionally invested” in her cousin and tried to take care of her.
That led to her decision to gift her cousin her honeymoon.
“For context,” the Redditor wrote, “I’m married and financially comfortable. I earn well, my husband runs a successful business, and we’re in a stable position. I’m also debt-free thanks to my parents and scholarships.”
In comparison, the bride and groom “work average-paying jobs and have college debt.”

Since the woman’s mom couldn’t help out with the honeymoon, she explained that she and her husband gave it as a wedding gift.
“I arranged everything through a friend who suggested an amazing package which included business class flights, a luxury resort for a week, and activities. It was a significant expense, but I was happy to do it,” she said, adding that her cousin “was ecstatic and extremely grateful.”
However, “That gratitude didn’t last long.”
“On the first day of the honeymoon, she sent me a restaurant bill of around $200 and asked me to reimburse her. I honestly thought she sent it by mistake,” she wrote. “When I asked why, she said that since I had promised to pay for the honeymoon, I should ‘do it properly’ and cover everything.”
The woman pointed out that she’d already “paid for flights, resort and activities.” She said she “never agreed to fund unlimited daily spending.”
Her cousin clearly did not agree.
“Since then, she has been sending me bills every single day—expensive meals, drinks. At this point, it feels less like I gifted a honeymoon and more like I accidentally signed up to finance her lifestyle,” the woman admitted, adding that her cousin’s tone implied she expected to be paid back.
Saying she was “conflicted,” the woman explained, “I can afford to pay for the food, but I don’t think it’s fair or what I agreed to. It’s not about the money at this point—it’s about the principle.”
She added that her husband was upset and worries she’s “being taken advantage of.”
Others agree that she’s being taken advantage of by funding the honeymoon
The woman sought assurance and wondered if she’d be wrong not to pay for the extra things. She found it on Reddit.
“Your husband is absolutely, 100% right. Listen to his advice. If you have trouble shutting it down, ask if he’s willing to do it,” one person said. Another agreed and called the cousin “a mooch.”
One Redditor advised, “Tell her ‘hey, I covered your flights, resorts and events. I never [promised an] all inclusive trip. And how you react makes me even regret to pay [the sum] in the first place. I don’t want to hear anything anymore from you. So now you are blocked. And if you are talking bad about me to relatives, I will show them how unthankfull you are. Good bye.’”
“No sane person thinks a gifted trip includes all expenses including food. The gift is exactly what is given, which in this case was tickets/hotels/activities. Anything else spent is entirely on the recipient,” someone else wrote.
Promising that she wasn’t wrong, a Redditor added, “You shouldn’t second guess yourself. You gave them a dream honeymoon as a very generous gift, not all expenses paid trip. Listen to your husband! Don’t spend an extra cent on them!”
