Like a dog with a bone NY Post has been posting update after update on the alleged Mike Vrabel/Dianna Russini affair. After photos of them hugging, holding hands, and hanging out in a hot tub at a romantic resort were published, they denied their relationship was anything but platonic, professional, and friendly. Now, pictures from 2020 show the pair holding hands and kissing at a bar. At the time, Russini was engaged and Vrabel was married.
Who? Mike Vrabel (head coach of the New England Patriots) and Dianna Russini (former writer for ESPN and The Athletic/NYTimes). Vrabel has been married for 26 years to his college sweetheart. Russini has been married for 6 years to an executive at Shake Shack.
Why is this happening now? Today is the first day of the NFL draft, is a huge event of the NFL season and this mild salsa drama is becoming piquante and is pulling focus. Teams do not like a coach’s personal life dominating headlines.
Consequences: Vrabel said he had to have “tough conversations” with his family and Rossini resigned from her highly paid job at the NY Times. Vrabel is also not attending the draft on Saturday in order to “seek counseling”. The NFL has not started an investigation yet but there are rumblings ESPN might do an investigation into Russini’s reporting when she worked for ESPN.
