King Charles will also address Congress, making the second time a British Monarch has addressed a joint meeting, following Queen Elizabeth II’s speech at the Capitol during a state visit in 1991.

While some feel that visiting the United States amid tensions between Trump and Starmer, and public interest in Prince Andrew’s role in the Epstein scandal, could pose reputational risk for King Charles, he is said to be “looking forward to the trip,” a source tells Vanity Fair.

“There was never any suggestion that the palace would cancel the trip. That would not be their decision to make and besides, the King would never risk causing such offense to a host nation. He and the Queen are excited about carrying out a full program of engagements.”

Royal watchers can expect some poignant and important moments. Before leaving Washington, King Charles and Queen Camilla will lay a wreath in honor of fallen service personnel, recognizing the two countries’ defense partnership. The moment is expected to be a show of solidarity between the US and the UK following Trump’s inflammatory comments about Britain’s involvement in Afghanistan prompting a rebuke from Starmer and Prince Harry, who served two tours of duty.

From Washington, King Charles and Queen Camilla will head to New York, where their engagements will focus on contemporary links between the UK and the US, particularly in business, culture, and community initiatives. Charles will visit a grassroots organization supporting young people affected by food insecurity through urban farming. Their Majesties will also commemorate the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, meeting first responders and families of victims.

As is usual on such a tour, the King and Queen’s program will be split at points. Camilla will attend a literary event organized by The Queen’s Reading Room, marking the 100th anniversary of Winnie the Pooh. Additional engagements will include meetings with business leaders and a reception highlighting the work of The King’s Trust in supporting young people.
