What’s Happening: The NFL draft, where all the teams pick prospective players, started Thursday April 24 and ended today April 26. Basically, you’re seen as hot commodity if you’re drafted in the first round (first day) of 32 players. Rounds 2 & 3 are on day 2, and Rounds 4-7 are on day 3.
The Man: 23 year old Shedeur Sanders, son of Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, was expected to be in the mix of being drafted within the Top 10, or at least top 3 for quarterbacks, or at least on the first day in the first round. Instead, he was not drafted either day one or day two.
Draft Slide Shockwaves: Shedeur not being drafted by the end of day two was THE escandalo story of the NFL given the hype. Mr. Musklicker even took a break from ruining our country to opine on social media after day one that Shedeur should be drafted “IMMEDIATELY”.
Commentary has touched on everything from racism, comparisons to Colin Kaepernick, to Shedeur’s choice to wear a 100k+ diamond necklace to his draft night viewing party (where he was not picked). There’s also rumors about his dad, Deion, being difficult. People argued that Shedeur is good but not amazing player who’s father has always coached him (and protected him) and did not participate in pre-draft workouts to advertise himself to coaches/teams. Most importantly, he seemed to not come across well in prospective interviews, with one unnamed assistant coach saying that Shedeur was “the worst formal interview I’ve ever been in in my life” and called him “so entitled.” Though, the NFL typically drafts more on talent and numbers than based off of personalities. Reporters and others in the football world have vouched for Shedeur saying that his teammates like him and he’s a hard worker.
Ultimately, Shedeur was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the fifth round, the #144th player picked. Notably, his dad did not want him playing somewhere cold. But he will be making $$$, though not as much as if he were drafted earlier. It’s okay though, as he has a trademarked line of merch of course.
