Don’t You (Forget About Me) by Scottish band Simple Minds was made famous by the The Breakfast Club. The band initially declined to record the song because they preferred to write their own songs. Their manager urged them to record the song because he thought the movie would be a hit. He arranged a private screening of the movie to convince them to record the song, but the band passed again, with lead singer Jim Kerr saying, “We couldn’t give a toss about teenage American schoolkids.”The song was then shopped to Bryan Ferry (Roxy Music), Corey Hart, and Billy Idol. Finally Jim Kerr’s wife, Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders, convinced him to give the song a try. Kerr added the now iconic “hey hey hey” at the beginning and the “la la la la la” section at the end. The song became Simple Minds’ breakout hit, going #1 in the United States, Canada, Belgium, and the Netherlands.
