As always, the releases on the week of Christmas are fewer in number but bigger in name. Searchlight is releasing the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, Focus is bringing vampires back to theaters with Nosferatu, and A24 is ringing the pavlovian bells of Babygirl. Cinematographer Rachel Morrison’s directorial debut The Fire Inside premieres for Amazon MGM, while Paramount releases a decidedly different type of music biopic in the Robbie Williams centered Better Man. All will be vying to take audience eyeballs away from last weekend’s wildly successful Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and the decidedly less successful Mufasa.
The films listed are from studios other than the “Big Five” – Universal Pictures, Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros., Walt Disney Pictures, and Columbia Pictures. Note that some of the movies listed are in their first week or two of limited release in the USA, so it may take them a few more weeks (or months) to show up in your local arthouse theater or on VOD. Two nights before filming was scheduled, after spending an entire week in rehearsal, Queen Elizabeth II passed away and the shoot had to be postponed.
