Why does clothing quality suck now?

    • Before Zara came around, most retailers had a few clothing collections per year (spring/summer and winter/fall). This meant things were carefully planned and designed over a period of at least nine months with quality fabrics and embellishments to garments kept in mind.
    • Zara threw that out the window with their concept being: a new collection every 15 days, mostly by plaigiarising from high end fashion runway shows.
    • After the 2008 recession, other retailers started following suit, cutting out quality for quantity. Namely the Forever 21 boom during that time.
    • Most retailers are now owned by Venture Capital firms whose main aim is to squeeze out as much profit as possible. Meaning more clothes for lower quality.
    • Unless you are buying high end designer, every clothing retailer is now fast fashion/ probably 100% polyester.
    • You can now see piles of clothing waste from Space.
    • RIP quality clothing of the 80s and 90s. Because Shein has a 64 billion IPO valuation on the London Stock Exchange, meaning fast fashion is most likely here to stay.

ONTD what is your current experience trying to find quality-made clothing? What’s your oldest piece of clothing you still wear? Mine are these two red cotton v-neck sweatshirts (jumpers in Australian English) that used to be my brother’s that he wore to school. They still have his name and class sharpied on them, lol. They were bought in 1995. A little faded but still going strong.
