Twitch Streamer Pokimane Calls Her Viewers “Broke” For Not Being Able to Afford Her Cookies

Imane Anys, better known as Pokimane, is a Moroccan and Canadian social media personality, Twitch streamer and YouTuber. She recently launched her own line of branded cookies, Myna Snacks: Midnight Mini Cookies. They are miniature cookies with added Vitamin D, which are sold in batches of four bags for $28.

During a stream, her viewers questioned the price when she decided to not only insult them, but call them broke. “When people are like ‘oh my god $28 for cookies,’ it’s four bags. That’s $7 per bag. I know, I know, math is hard when you’re an idiot. But, if you’re a broke boy just say so.” She faced immediate backlash shortly after the clip made the rounds on social media.

Pokimane then took to Twitter to “apologize” and claimed she was merely joking. “While what I said was 100% intended to be a joke, I see why it came off as insensitive and I apologize for that,” Pokimane said in a tweet posted on Nov 19.

This isn’t the first controversy her brand has faced. Her launch was immediately followed by accusations that it was a rip-off of Toatzy Midnight Mini Cookies, which were sold at Costco for far less and offered more product. Not only did both products have similar names, people discovered that they were both made by Creation Foods, a company that specializes in health-conscious food. Pokimane and Myna Snacks released statements to address the allegations, and emphasized that Myna Snacks Midnight Mini Cookies’ formulation is unique and exclusive to the brand. She explained that when she started working with Creation Foods, she fell in love with its Midnight cookies’ flavor profile and decided to refine an older version of the snack.
