Blue Beetle debuted this weekend with a poor showing of $25.4 million from 3,871 theaters. The film took in another $18 million internationally, to debut to $43 million worldwide. The $104 million film is the second-lowest debut for a DCEU/DCU film after Wonder Woman 1984’s covid-era release. Word of mouth isn’t even that high, as the film scored a B+ Cinemascore and a 3.3 on Letterboxd. This will be DC’s fourth flop in a row and we still have Aquaman to come. Tragic.
A month after release, Barbenheimer is still as strong as ever. Barbie landed in 2nd with $21.5 million, another stellar 36% drop. The film has domestically taken in $567 million and will pass The Super Mario Bros Movie by next weekend to become the top film domestically for the year. Oppenheimer followed with $10.6 million, dropping 44%. Its domestic total now stands at $285 million, and will overtake The Little Mermaid next weekend to enter the Top 5 of the year. Worldwide the film has taken in $717 million and has yet to open in China or Italy.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem came in 4th with $8.4 million. This too continues its strong run, dropping only 45% despite losing almost 1,000 theaters. So far the film has a domestic total of $88.1 million.
Strays debuted in 5th with a flop $8.3 million and $10.3 million worldwide. The $46 million film also landed a B+ Cinemascore, but a 2.8 on Letterboxd.
Next weekend: Gran Turismo, Bottoms, Golda, Retribution
