Taylor Swift is earning inexplicably rave reviews from music critics for her eleventh studio album, THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT, released on April 19. It currently holds a Metascore of 84 based on 12 reviews, making it her fourth highest scored album behind 2020’s folklore (88) and evermore (85) and 2022’s Midnights (also 85).
“Taylor became a legend as the poet laureate of teen romance. But that was kid stuff compared to the adult heartbreak of her stunning new album… the cathartic confession of a woman who thought she had adulthood—and adult romance—all figured out, only to find herself realizing she knows nothing.” ★★★★★ —Rolling Stone

“[Swift is] an exceptionally talented writer: there’s a depth and maturity to this album that makes her competitors look a little wan by comparison.” ★★★★ —The Guardian

“…a terrific reminder of the intense, personal connection Swift can conjure in song.” ★★★★★ —The Independent

“In terms of emotional insight and sheer singer-songwriter genius, it is not in the league of such heartbreak classics as Bob Dylan’s Blood on the Tracks and Joni Mitchell’s Blue, but at least it reaches for such heights. Swift knows her way around metaphors and similes and delights in conjuring delicately cascading tranches of clever puns and dazzling word play rooted in real feelings.” ★★★★ —The Telegraph

“As a culmination of her particular genius for marrying cleverness with catharsis, [it] kind of feels like the Taylor Swift-est Taylor Swift record ever.” ★★★★½ —Variety
