The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes kept its #1 position, grossing $42 million for the 5-day and $28.8 million for the 3-day weekend, a healthy 35% drop from its opening 3-day last week. Its current domestic total stands at $98.4 million with a worldwide total of $197.3 million.
Napolean debuted in 2nd, coming in with a better-than-expected $32.5 million 5-day, $21 million 3-day, and $79 million worldwide. Tracking had the film debuting to a low-20s 5-day. Audiences weren’t as big on the film though, giving it a B- Cinemascore and a 46% recommend on PostTrak. Letterboxd is slighty better with a 3.2. Despite it costing $200 million, Apple isn’t concerned with box office and has no problem with its price tag or returns. Unlike our next studio….
Disney’s Wish, which was expected to debut on top with a $45-50 million gross, bombed in 3rd with a $31.7 million 5-day and $19.5 million 3-day. The film only added another $17.3 million internationally to start with a $49 million worldwide debut. Ouch! The $200 million film is another disappointment for Disney, in a year of disappointments. The film received an A- Cinemascore, but only a 2.8 on Letterboxd. Could had legs and play well on D+ like Elemental, but we’ll see.
Trolls Band Together ($25.3M 5-day, $17.5M 3-day) and Thanksgiving ($11.1M, $7.1M) rounded out the Top 5. Meanwhile, The Marvels fell out the top 5 completely, landing in 6th with a $9.2 million 5-day and $6.4 million 3-day. Saltburn expanded to 1,566 theaters and took in $2.7 million for the 5-day and $1.7 million for the 3-day.
Next weekend: Renaissance, Godzilla Minus One, Silent Night, Eileen, May December
