Patrick Stewart’s memoir was just released yesterday so Rolling Stone printed an excerpt about Patrick meeting Paul McCartney.

In 1965, he did a play in Bristol called The Happiest Days of Your Life. One of actresses in the play was Jane Asher. Patrick said everyone in the cast knew she was dating Paul McCartney but they never brought it up with her. One night after a performance, the cast was drinking together at a pub. Someone asked the first thing they would buy if they had a million pounds. Patrick said he would buy an Aston Martin DB4 (he was driving an old MG at the time).

The next week, Paul came to see his girlfriend Jane perform in the play. After the show, Paul came to Patrick’s dressing room and said that Jane had told him Patrick liked Aston Martins, then tossed his car keys and offered to let Patrick drive his silver Aston Martin DB5. After Jane and Paul got in the back seat, Paul said he’d never been to Bath and told Patrick to drive there. There was no traffic so Paul kept telling Patrick to drive faster. Patrick had the presence of mind to think, “If I kill Paul McCartney, it will be the only thing I will be remembered for.”

Decades later, Patrick and Paul crossed paths at an event. Patrick thought by that time, Paul might recognize him from Star Trek: The Next Generation. Instead, Paul said, “Hey, Patrick, do you remember when we met in Bristol and I let you drive my DB5?”
