That’s always a good problem to have, especially when the streamer has fresh selections in multiple genres.

Watch With Us has helpfully narrowed down this week’s films to the three most popular Netflix movies you need to watch right now.

Our selections include a massive box-office hit, a rom-com remake and a summer action flick that’s still drawing fans 30 years later.

‘How to Train Your Dragon’ (2025)

Mason Thames‘ theatrical debut, The Black Phone, is coming to Netflix later this week. But his biggest starring role to date will arrive sooner, as the streamer adds the live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon. If you’ve seen the original film, then there won’t be many surprises in this version of it. But the 15-year gap between the animated flick and the remake has allowed the special effects team to make some notable advances in the latter.

Gerard Butler reprises his role as Stoick the Vast, the Viking chief of Berk and the father of Hiccup (Thames). Although Hiccup can never be the warrior that his father is, his compassion and heart allow him to bond with an injured dragon he calls Toothless. Hiccup has discovered that dragons can be tamed; now he just needs to convince the rest of his village to put aside their enmity for these creatures and unite against their common enemy.

How to Train Your Dragon is now streaming on Netflix.

    ‘Overboard’ (2018)

Overboard is a gender-flipped take on the 1987 original film starring Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. This time, Anna Faris is in the lead as Kate Sullivan, a widowed mother whose struggles are amplified when playboy Leonardo Montenegro (Eugenio Derbez) treats her like a servant and thoughtlessly throws her off his ship without paying her for cleaning it. Leonardo gets his comeuppance shortly thereafter when he falls off the ship himself and suffers amnesia.

     ‘Independence Day’ (1996)

Independence Day is dropping a little bit early this year, but aliens blowing up the White House and other national landmarks is never out of season. On the third of July, mankind is visited by beings from another world who proceed to devastate the United States and other countries around the world. Humanity becomes an endangered species overnight as the survivors come together.

Will Smith had one of his first theatrical leading roles as Captain Steven Hiller, a Marine pilot who has proof that the aliens aren’t invincible. Jeff Goldblum also stars as David Levinson, an engineer whose technical expertise may hold the key to turning back the invasion. On July 4, humanity makes its last stand, and the rallying speech by President Thomas J. Whitmore (Bill Pullman) still gives us goosebumps.
