    Dwayne Johnson Says ‘Best Friend’ & Co-Star Emily Blunt Helped Him with ‘The Smashing Machine’

    Dwayne Johnson says Emily Blunt is the reason he wasn’t afraid to get vulnerable in their latest movie together.

    The 53-year-old actor spoke to Vanity Fair about working with 42-year-old Emily on their latest movie. In The Smashing Machine, Dwayne played UFC legend Mark Kerr while Emily played his wife, Dawn Staples-Kerr.

    According to Dwayne, he was able to really get vulnerable while filming the biopic because he working with his “best friend,” Emily.

    “If Emily and I weren’t best friends, I don’t know that we could’ve gone to the places we went to,” Dwayne told Vanity Fair in an interview published Monday, August 25. He went on to say that being so close to Emily made him feel comfortable about really getting into character.

    Meanwhile, Emily spoke about her co-star’s “immersion” into the film, saying that he was immediately locked in and focused on his character from the moment they started filming.

    “He has absorbed and borne witness to so much of what Mark has experienced that it was such a beautiful thing to watch this person let go of having to be an image, of having to be The Rock, and crack himself in half for this role,” Emily told Vanity Fair.
