Back to the ranch! The Yellowstone universe keeps expanding and the newest addition will spotlight a different generation of the Dutton family.
After the success of the show’s first spinoff, 1883, Paramount+ announced another limited series titled 1932 in February 2022. While 1883 focused on the first generation of Duttons who established the family’s sprawling Montana ranch, 1932 is set to highlight their descendants. (In June 2022, the streaming service announced that the show’s title had been changed to 1923.)
According to an official description from the streaming service, 1923 will “explore the early 20th century when pandemics, historic drought, the end of Prohibition and the Great Depression all plague the mountain west, and the Duttons who call it home.”
The original iteration of Yellowstone follows ranch patriarch John Dutton (Kevin Costner) and his children Kayce (Luke Grimes), Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Jamie (Wes Bentley) as they attempt to fend off developers and government officials who want to cut into the family’s profits.
Since the show premiered in 2018, Yellowstone has become one of the most popular series on cable. Even two-time Oscar winner Costner was blown away by the show’s phenomenal success.
“I couldn’t have predicted its popularity, or looked five years ahead, but I’m never surprised at what quality can turn into,” he told Deadline in February 2022. “Being popular and really good doesn’t have to be mutually exclusive. And so, I’m pleasantly surprised.”
Though Yellowstone is a contemporary take on westerns, creator Taylor Sheridan drew inspiration from media set during the American Civil War.
“I was very influenced by writers like Cormac McCarthy, Larry McMurtry, Toni Morrison, who wrote about the time around the Civil War, which is obviously very similar themes,” he told Variety in April 2022. “And in terms of the movies that influenced me, it was watching Unforgiven when I was in my late teens or very early 20s. The same with Dances With Wolves, where you’re looking at the Western genre through a whole new lens that had never been explored before.”
In addition to 1923, another Yellowstone spinoff titled 6666 is in the works. That series will be set in the present day at the Four Sixes ranch in Texas. The property appeared in season 4 of the flagship show when Jimmy Hurdstrom (Jefferson White) put down roots there with his fiancée, Emily (Kathryn Kelly).
Though Jimmy will likely appear in 6666, he’s also set to return to Yellowstone in the future. “I’m in season 5. Jimmy’s in season 5,” White told Us Weekly in March 2022. “That’s great. I’m really looking forward to that. I didn’t know necessarily what Jimmy’s future was. I still don’t know exactly what Jimmy’s future holds.”

In May 2022, Paramount+ announced that Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren will lead the new series in undisclosed roles. The duo previously worked together in the 1986 film The Mosquito Coast.
Plot details for 1923 are scarce, but the official synopsis notes that it will follow the Dutton family as they struggle to maintain the ranch in the aftermath of the 1918 flu pandemic and the Great Depression.
Ford and Mirren will presumably be playing forbears of the Dutton family, but it’s not yet clear how they’re related to John and his children. In 1883, Tim McGraw played John’s great-grandfather James, so it seems likely that 1923 will focus on John’s grandparents.
The spinoff is scheduled to debut on Paramount+ on December 18, 2022.
In June 2022, Paramount+ announced that 1932 would instead be called 1923 — and would also be set in that year. According to a new description for the show, the action will now place amid an economic downturn in Montana that preceded the national Great Depression. The new plot synopsis no longer mentions the end of Prohibition, which ended in 1933, but notes that the Duttons will be dealing with “an epidemic of cattle theft.”
In September 2022, Paramount+ announced that they would be introducing a new generation of the Dutton family for the prequel. In addition to Mirren and Ford as matriarch Cara Dutton and patriarch Jacob Dutton, respectively, the cast will include Darren Mann as dedicated rancher (and Jacob’s great-nephew) Jack. James Badge Dale, meanwhile, will play Jack’s father and Jacob’s right-hand-man, James Dutton Sr., with Marley Shelton joining as his wife, Emma Dutton.
Other new additions include Michelle Randolph as the “feisty” Elizabeth Strafford, who is planning to marry into the family, Brian Geraghty as loyal ranch hand Zane and Julia Schlaepfer as a young woman who meets the Duttons abroad. The group will be rounded out by Aminah Nieves, who will play Teonna Rainwater, a young Native woman at a government residential boarding school.
In November 2022, Paramount+ unveiled the first trailer for 1923, with footage of Mirren and Ford threatening revenge on the Yellowstone’s enemies. “Men kill quick with a bullet or a noose, but your fight is with me and I kill much slower,” Mirren tells Banner Creighton, who is seemingly one of the series’ antagonists. (Banner is played by Jerome Flynn, who starred as Bronn on Game of Thrones.)
