Martin’s daughter Maggie Mull, a TV writer, announced his death after
“a long [undisclosed] illness” on her Instagram, embedded at the source.
Martin’s career started in the 70s on Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, a
soap opera parody TV series created by Norman Lear. He appeared on 2
spinoffs of that show with the late Fred Willard.
He continued to work regularly for decades in TV, film and as a voice
actor, with memorable roles in Roseanne, The Simpsons,
Arrested Development, Veep, Bob’s Burgers, and of
course as Colonel Mustard inĀ Clue.
Lesser known are the satirical “cultural studies” books and TV specials he
created under the blanket title The History of White People in
America. He was also a RISD graduate, a multimedia artist and
songwriter.
I’ll never forget him as Leon saying “I smell Aramis!” in that episode of Roseanne set at a gay bar. RIP and condolences to his family and friends.
